Global Internships: Beyond Borders

Global Internships: Beyond Borders

At THSA, internships are a vital component of our students’ academic journey, whether they’re pursuing an Associate degree, Bachelor’s or Master’s program. While many students choose to complete their internships in Australia to stay close to family or to build network, others take the exciting plunge into international opportunities. These international internships provide invaluable insights into different cultures and professional practices of the country they choose to complete their internships at.

At THSA, we expose our students to as many global experiences as possible. Throughout their studies, students get the chance to visit global hotels for a site tours and meet industry leaders from which, some have worked overseas for a portion of their life. These industry leaders share their experiences, offering a unique perspective on the differences between working in Australia and abroad.

Moreover, one of the highlights of studying at THSA is the Annual Study Trip. Recently, a group of students went to Singapore to explore business communications in the hospitality and tourism sectors in Singapore. During their visit, they engaged with local professionals, learned about various hospitality practices, and immersed themselves in Singapore’s vibrant culture. This hands-on experience further highlighted the importance of adaptability and global awareness within this industry.

One of THSA’s greatest advantage is our Professional Learning Centre (PLC) team, who is dedicated to make these global opportunities a reality. They offer professional development courses, workshops, and engaging industry speaker sessions to prepare our students for success anywhere in the world.

Here’s what some of our students have to say about their international internship experience:

-Jasmine Robinson
Associate Degree of International Tourism and Hotel Management
As I was planning to move to London, I was looking for opportunities where I would be able to stay and develop after my internship and the GM of InterContinental Hayman Island, where I completed my first internship, helped me greatly in setting up my role and internship with InterContinental London Park Lane. Thus, i was able to land a job there as a Receptionist, then quickly moved up into a Club Lounge Team Leader role. As my dream career is to eventually move into the Learning and Development side of hotels, I recently moved into a new role as People and Culture Coordinator at The Lanesborough, London. THS studies have helped me towards achieving this as it not only helped me discover my love for hotels, but also helped with practical skills and knowledge needed to achieve my goals.

-Tabitha Yesberg
Associate Degree of International Tourism and Hotel Management
I heard about the Disney program back in 2019 and had a dream of always working for the company. When it was time for me to complete my internship, Kate Pooley from the PLC team assisted me with my interview preparation, and that landed me the job at Walt Disney in Florida, USA as a Quick Service F&B Attendant and Merchandise. The combination of studying and working in the industry has provided me with a wealth of knowledge on how to deal with different type of guests, and ease with working in a variety of departments. After that, I returned to Brisbane to further my studies and complete my second internship at The Sebel Brisbane, where I work as a Guest Service Agent.

Choosing a global internship not only broadens knowledge but also positions students as a competitive candidate in the hospitality and tourism workforce. With THSA’s focus on fostering global careers, you’ll be well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the international landscape.
