Finding My Place at University: My Journey at The Hotel School Australia

I Never Thought University Was for Me. Until I Found The Hotel School.

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be studying at university, I honestly wouldn’t have believed you.

Growing up, I thought my future was in musical theatre. University was never part of the plan. I struggled academically in high school and was also navigating dyslexia, which made traditional learning really hard. I didn’t see myself as “the uni type”, and for a long time, I thought that meant my options were limited.

Then I found The Hotel School Australia, and everything changed.

Realising There Was Another Way to Do Uni

What first stood out to me about The Hotel School was that it didn’t feel like a typical university. It wasn’t all about exams, long lectures, and sitting in classrooms all day. It was practical, hands-on, and focused on the real hospitality industry.

But more than that, it was the people.

The staff don’t just teach. They genuinely care. They supported me, encouraged me, and believed in me, even when I didn’t fully believe in myself yet. For the first time, I felt like I belonged in a learning environment.

I realised that university didn’t have to look one specific way. It could be engaging. It could be supportive. And it could actually prepare you for a real career.

The Moment I Knew I Was on the Right Path

One of the most special experiences I’ve had at The Hotel School was travelling to Cairns as part of the Student Ambassador Team.

Standing in front of high school students, sharing my story, was a full-circle moment for me. Not long ago, I was the one sitting in those chairs, unsure about my future and questioning whether I was capable of going to university.

Now, I was the one saying, “If I can do this, so can you.”

I spoke to students who reminded me so much of myself. Some weren’t sure what they wanted to do after Year 12. Others didn’t think uni was for them. One student told me they’d never even considered hospitality or realised there could be a life beyond high school until hearing my journey.

That moment meant everything. It reminded me that doubt doesn’t define you. Your starting point doesn’t determine where you’ll end up.

What Studying at The Hotel School Is Really Like

No two days are ever the same, and that’s one of my favourite parts.

My days usually include interactive classes where we apply what we’re learning to real industry scenarios, not just theory. Our lecturers have actually worked in hotels, so what they teach comes from real experience.

Outside of class, there are networking events, guest speakers, group projects, and opportunities to connect with industry professionals. Many of us also work part-time in hotels while studying, which means you’re constantly building experience alongside your degree.

It doesn’t feel like you’re just studying for the sake of it. Everything has a purpose.

Why This Course Sets You Up for the Real World

Through my course, I’ve gained skills that go far beyond textbooks. I’ve learned how to problem-solve, think critically, communicate confidently, and lead with empathy.

Hospitality is all about people, and The Hotel School really understands that. You’re taught how to manage teams, deliver exceptional guest experiences, and adapt in a fast-paced industry. You’re also encouraged to think creatively and develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

The mix of study, real-world experience, and industry exposure has given me the confidence to step into professional environments and know that I belong there.

My Advice for Year 12 Students

If you’re in Year 12 and feeling unsure about university, here’s what I want you to know.

  • You don’t have to have everything figured out.

  • You don’t have to fit the “traditional” uni mould.

  • And struggling in high school does not mean you won’t succeed.

Say yes to opportunities. Ask questions. Try things that feel a little uncomfortable. The Hotel School gives you access to industry connections, support, and experiences that can genuinely change your path, but you have to be willing to take that first step.

Most importantly, remember that hospitality is about people. If you care about others, enjoy working in dynamic environments, and want a career with real opportunities around the world, this industry might be exactly where you belong.

Looking Ahead

My dream isn’t defined by a job title. It’s about becoming a leader, inspiring other women in hospitality, and showing young people that they are capable of more than they think.

The Hotel School helped me see my own potential. It gave me confidence, skills, and a belief in myself that I didn’t have before.

If you’re reading this and wondering whether uni is for you, I was once in your position. And I’m so glad I took the chance.

Sometimes, the path you never expected is the one that fits you best.
